About the Writing Studio

The Writing Studio offers in-person and remote tutoring in writing to undergraduate and graduate students with a specific focus on assisting underserved populations (Hispanic/Latinx and low-income, including English language learners). Through its holistic and research-based approach to tutoring, the Writing Studio encourages lifelong learning and is committed to students’ academic, personal, and professional development.

Monday – Friday, 9:00 a.m. – 5:00 p.m.

Sign in to the Navigate app with your SPU credentials > Explore page > Appointments > Schedule an Appointment > What type of appointment would you like to schedule? > Peer Tutoring & Mentoring Service > Choose a service under the Writing Studio location > Pick a Date > Find Available Time > Under locations, click the Writing Studio.

To book an appointment with any person, choose an available date and time. To choose a specific person, click View Individual Availabilities and select a date and time that works best for you.

Writing Workshops

Workshops are offered once a month, 3 months per semester. (In-class workshops are available upon request.)

APA Format: 7th Edition
This workshop covers the main elements of the 7th edition of APA format (cover page, in-text citations, References page, etc.) and strategies for reading and writing research. (One-hour workshop).

APA Format & Writing the Literature Review
Upperclassmen and graduate students who are writing research papers are encouraged to attend this workshop. Topics include the main elements of APA format (cover page, in-text citations, References page, etc.) and how to synthesize sources in the literature review. (Two-hour workshop).

MLA Format: 9th Edition
This workshop covers the main elements of the 9th edition of MLA format (how to format the first page, in-text citations, short/long quotes, and the Works Cited page). (One-hour workshop).

Navigating the Writing Process
This workshop is designed to help all students navigate the recursive writing process from prewriting and drafting to revising and editing. Topics include perceptions about the writing process, understanding the writing prompt/instructions, and tools/strategies to help students
engage in each stage for various writing tasks. (One-hour workshop).

Writing the Thesis Statement & Structuring an Essay
This workshop is designed for beginning writers and explores effective essay-writing techniques (creating a strong thesis statement, organizing supporting paragraphs, etc.). (One-hour workshop).

Students

  • Students are expected to bring course materials, such as assignments, syllabi, or textbooks to their sessions. They should also practice academic skills or attempt their assignments outside the tutoring session.
  • Students should actively engage in the session, such as asking questions, being honest about their needs and expectations, having the tutor quiz them on content, or revising parts of an assignment.
  • Students should not book sessions during class time.
  • Students should arrive on time for their sessions.
  • Students should uphold academic integrity during the session.
  • Students should maintain appropriate behavior during the session.


Tutors

  • Tutors should model problem-solving skills and offer opportunities for the students to practice them.
  • Tutors cannot guarantee grades but should offer strategies and resources to help students improve their comprehension of course material and academic skills.
  • Tutors should not complete an assignment or quiz/test/exam for the student.
  • Tutors should arrive on time for their sessions.
  • Tutors should be patient with students and encourage them to participate in the session.
  • Tutors should maintain appropriate behavior during the session.
